Customer Raves and Rants
Here are some substantive comments from Amazon customers who have bought and used the Roadtrip Grill. We try to highlight the features that customers liked the most and disliked the most about using, transporting and storing the grill without repeating the comments.
- Features that people liked the most: -
Cooking Performance
Only a few commenters ever used the letters BTU but it seems obvious from the many favorable cooking comments that having 20,000 BTUs on demand is a favorite feature. The Roadtrip can get HOT.
Several commenters feel that the Roadtrip in operating mode is very sturdy and they don’t worry about overloading the side tables or the grills. A dislike is that the legs only adjust about 1/2″ so you have to set up on a fairly level surface.
In relation to the grills sturdiness and work area – a few commenters said they were happy that didn’t have to use a separate table anymore. One or two did say they thought the grill could get knocked over easier than they would have liked.
Transportation and Storage
Several commenters like that the Roadtrip can be folded and stored away in a bag. Most of these commenters are RV types and tailgaters with a few apartment dwellers in the mix.
A few people thought the Roadtrip was too heavy for one person to carry and set up although the majority of commenters did not ever mention weight or bulkiness.
The Roadtrip is THE grill for tailgaters. A red Roadtrip apparently separates the rookies from the veterans judging from the number of commenters who bought their first Roadtrip after surveying the competition.
Clean Up
Commenters go both ways. Some think it’s easy as pie to clean-up after grilling while others complain that the some spaces are too difficult to reach.
Everybody seems to like the idea of the water feature that catches dripping fat but not too many seem to like emptying it.
People who toss the grills in the dishwasher seem the most pleased.
Assembly and Set-Up
The absence of complaints on assembly and set up must mean that it’s fairly easy and uncomplicated. Push on the wheels and insert the plastic handle and it’s ready to use!
- Features that people disliked the most or felt could be improved: -
Aluminum Grill / Griddle (A solution is to use the cast iron replacement grill /griddle plate. The Roadtrip Red comes new with porcelain covered cast iron grill grates).
One commenter reports that scrubbing the aluminum grill with a plastic scrubber has removed some of the non-stick coating.
At least one commenter thinks the aluminum griddle plate is too flimsy and has concerns about the nonstick coating putting nasty stuff in the food.
One commenter estimates that he gets about 100 heat cycles from an aluminum grill before it starts to warp a bit.
No Cooking with Lid in Closed Position
Coleman recommends not cooking with the lid closed although this was absent from earlier instructions. The handle gets too hot to touch and there is a possibility of damaging the handle with the lid closed.
Defective Gas Regulator
A couple commenters report that the gas regulator that came with the grill failed after a couple uses. Failure apparently occurs very early or not at all as there were no comments about the regulator failing in years 2, 3 4.
One Grill / One Griddle Plate
The Roadtrip comes with one grill and one griddle plate. A few commenters would have preferred two grills and didn’t like the idea of paying for the second one.
