<img style="float:left" hspace="10" src="http://www.colemanroadtripgrill.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/CropperCapture1201.png" alt="T Bone Steak Grilled" title="T Bone Steak Grilled" width="275" height="277" size-full wp-image-291" />
2 T-Bone or Porterhouse steaks, cut 1 1/2 inches thick (about 1 lb. each).
Wood chips for packet (see Cook’s Tips below)
2 Tablespoons packed brown sugar
1 Tablespoon steak seasoning blend
1 Tablespoon chili powder
Salt

Chunky BBQ Sauce:

1/4 Cup drained, canned pineapple, coarsely chopped
1/4 Cup chopped red onion
1 Tablespoon brown sugar
1 1/2 Teaspoons balsamic vinegar
1/2 Cup mild BBQ sauce

1. Combine pineapple, onion, 1 Tbsp. brown sugar and vinegar in small saucepan. Cook on high for 2-3 minutes or until liquid is syrupy. Stir. Reduce heat to medium. Add the BBQ sauce. Cook and stir for 1 minute. Set aside.

2. Combine 2 Tbsp. brown sugar, steak seasoning and chili powder in small bowl – rub onto steaks

3. Heat grill to medium. Place wood chip foil package on one side of grill directly on coals or burner. Place steaks to side of foil packet and not directly over the foil packet or direct flame. Grill covered about 20-24 minutes for medium rare.

4. Carve across the grain into thin slices. Serve with the chunky pineapple BBQ sauce.

Cooks Tips:

To make the wood chip packet, tear a 12-inch square of heavy duty aluminum foil. Place 1 cup of dry hickory wood chips into center of foil. Fold the foil over the chips several times into a tight, small bundle. Pierce the top of the foil bundle several times with a fork.

Adding smoked flavors to your favorite grilling recipes can turn a good barbecue into a truly great experience. You can spend lots of money getting a specialty smoker or with the tips we tell you about here you can turn your Colman road trip grill into a backyard smoker that you can also use on camping trips or for a family day at the beach.

Which wood should you use for smoking?

Most stores that carry grills and barbecue supplies also stock a variety of woods that you can use for smoking. These commercially available products come either as small, thin slices (“chips”) or as larger “chunks” of wood. You may also see hardwood logs or bags of hardwood sawdust but we recommend you avoid these choices because using them requires additional tools. Chips and chunks work great and are easy to use.

Chips are ready to use right out of the bag. Hardwood chunks may still have bark attached. Until you have had the opportunity to experiment with bark you may want to avoid using chunks with bark. Depending on the amount of bark on the chunks you could be adding some unexpected bitter flavors. Chunks are still a good choice because they are much larger than the chips, they burn and smoke longer, and require less of your attention.

You do not have to use commercially prepared chips if you have some hardwood sources available to you. There are three kinds of woods that you do want to avoid completely, however:

Softwood from evergreen trees. Pine and other evergreens contain lots of resins and other volatile substances that can impart some nasty off-flavors.

Green wood of any kind. Undried wood when burned can create creosote and other potentially harmful toxins.

Chemically treated wood of any kind. That includes most lumber used for construction even if it is not specifically labeled as treated wood.

How should you for prepare the wood chips?

With a charcoal grill you could just toss the chips on the hot coals and be done with it. You may not want to do that, however. The chips will ignite and burn hot and fast creating a lot of smoke at first but then fading out almost as quickly.

You will get better results if you soak the wood chips or chunks in clean water for 20 to 30 minutes. Drain them well and toss them on the coals. They will burn much longer and give off more smoke.

Follow the same soaking and draining procedure for your gas Roadtrip Grill. Wrap the damp chips in heavy duty foil, punch some holes on the top, and place the bundle directly on the burner. You can also use a soup can with the paper label removed and some ventilation holes punched toward the bottom side of the can. You can also buy a metal smoker box made especially for gas grills.

You will have to experiment to determine how much smoke flavor you want to add to your different grilling recipes. If you like lots of smoke flavor then you will have to tend the grill and replace the burned-out chips on a regular basis.

Here is a list of recommended hardwoods, the kind of a flavor you can expect from their smoke, and the best food matches for each hardwood variety.

Fruit Woods (apple, cherry,peach)

Slightly sweet, mildly fruity without much acidity

Chicken or pork best but experiment with everything else too

Hickory

The classic smoke flavor in many commercial barbecue sauces and barbecue-flavor foods

Beef, chicken, pork, seafood – just about everything

Maple

Mild, sweet flavors

Best with pork but adds sweetness to poultry, seafood and vegetables

Mesquite

Powerful, slightly bitter flavor. Hallmark of Southwestern cuisine

Best with strong flavors like beef, lamb, game or duck

Oak

Slightly nutty flavor

Beef and lamb best. Experiment with everything else

Pecan

A milder version of hickory

Beef, chicken, pork, seafood – just about everything

Coleman 9941-768 Road Trip Grill (Blue)

This Coleman Road Trip Grill folds small for easy storage but opens into a full-sized propane grill with a generous 285 sq. in. cooking surface.

Tote it easily to a tailgate party or picnic for delicious flame grilled food on the road or off the beaten path. 20,000 BTUs offer hotter, faster cooking and the removable Mix & Match surfaces let you use it as a grill, griddle or stove. Use it on the stand (included) or on your tabletop. Includes matchless lighting, 2 fully adjustable, independently controlled burners and lid locks for secure transportation. Operates on 16.4-ounce propane cylinder or adaptable to a 20-pound tank (propane cylinder, tank hose, and tank sold separately)

Tired of taking your funky hibachi to the ballpark every time you want to tailgate? Turn to the Coleman Road Trip Grill, an authentic open-flame grill that packs up compactly for easy transport and storage. The burners are powerful enough for both cold-weather and high-altitude cooking, so you can use the Road Trip Grill in destinations like Green Bay, Denver, and Buffalo, N.Y. Perhaps the coolest feature, however, is the collapsible frame, which holds the grill at a standard cooking level in its open position, but folds up in seconds when it’s time to go. There’s no easier way to enjoy the versatility of a full-size upright grill and the convenience of a portable unit.

Coleman Road Trip Grill (Blue) Features:

“The grill that saved camping” October 2, 2002

We purchased this Road Trip after having a horrible experience with a grill from Cabelas. That grill had the lava rocks that moved every time you moved the grill and besides that the legs fell off. We were looking for something that would have fold under legs and no rocks. The Road Trip saved our camping days. We purchased a bag for it, keep it stored in the belly of the camper and with putting water in the tray below the burners, it is very very easy to clean up. You can place this on the picnic table to cook on or use the fold down legs. We have also discovered that this is the best way to cook grilled onions and potatoes or pork chops or chicken, etc on the griddle. Very very convenient and easy clean up. We both rate this a 5 stars. Great job, Coleman. Signed happy camper, Janet Becker

This grill replaced our old gas grill at home. In four years I’ve went through 4 grills to rust that occurs naturally here, just by a metal object being outside. I wanted a solution to finally eliminate that problem. This fits the bill with the fold up capability, and the storage bag to keep it fresh. You’re still cooking over an open flame with the grill plate.

It comes with a griddle and a grill, each covering half of the cooking area, and I’ve obtained a 20-lb tank attachment, and an extra grill, for the big jobs. Try this feature out: the grill, griddle, and drip trays are washable in the dishwasher…. I can’t say that about my old grills.

A Tailgaters Delight December 24, 2003

I cannot say enough about this product. It is absolutely great for tailgating or any other activity where you want a grill on the go. During this past football season, we on average cooked 50-75 bratwursts and hotdogs. The grill holds about 30 at one time, so in no time you can make sure to get everyone fed. The grill is reliable, easy to set-up and breakdown, and heats up immediately. The electric start is also a huge bonus, especially in windy situations.

Couple of notes:
The grill comes standard with a grill and a griddle, but if you are into serious grilling then I recommend you can purchase a separate grill to replace the griddle for more grilling area. Second, Coleman sells a carrying/rolling case which is a must have for tailgating/camping. The case lets you pack everything into a small compact set and keeps your car clean when transporting. Finally, if you are seriously into grilling on the go purchase a one-gallon gas tank, the grill is highly efficient and you will get a significant amount of use out of the smaller tank.

Tailgating Fun!! March 4, 2007

I got my Grill to Go Advantage just recently and have been very pleased so far. The makers of the Grill 2 Go appear to have heard some of the criticisms of earlier models and taken that into consideration with this grill. The open flame cooking is preferable to the previous models, it is still easy to transport, and it has made tailgating with friends before watching my Tarheels play basketball a lot of fun. I completely disagree with the other reviewer who seems to be reviewing the wrong product since this grill does not use a non-stick cooking surface for the cooking area.

Before I purchased this grill I was looking for the Char-Broil Fire & Ice Grill (the one with the cooler below); however they have discontinued it for some weird reason. So I researched this one for my tailgate and decided to give it a try. I normally use charcoal however it is such a mess and the smoke blows over into others tailgates which is a little rude.

PROS: Great portable grill; love the side tables; 16 oz propane tank lasted hours (which is very nice); cute little extras like a flag and extra propane tank holder, a holder for paper towels and a holder for the propane tank in use; LED lights are a nice touch; very light considering how large this grill is; has a Non-Stick Teflon coated griddle (good for breakfast items); has a grease collector under the grill; has an ignitior, very easy to setup and start cooking

CONS: You have to assemble this grill out of the box (takes about an hour) and this was disappointing;
MOST DISAPPOINTING FEATURE…you cannot just extend the legs of the base and start grilling, you must take the grill off, extend the legs and set the grill on top of the base, this again applies if you want to collapse the grill, you must take the grill off the base collapse the legs and place the grill back on top; does not have a propane gauge letting you know how much gas is left; make sure it is on a level surface, we tried to make scrambled eggs and they ran off the griddle down to the bottom of the grill

Overall if you can catch this grill on sale it is worth the money (purchased mine for around $160 on Amazon). I still believe a $200 grill should have some extra features like a propane gauge, and the grill should be able to setup without taking it on and off the base.

***PS:Thermos sells a carrying bag for the Grill 2 Go; however it does NOT fit this model. You can fit the grill but not the legs. Returned the carrying bag to Amazon and had my $40 refunded.***

Been waiting for awhile to find a good deal on this, but Amazon’s got the best price with shipping you are going to find. $0.01, doesn’t get much better than that. What surprised the heck out of me was ordering early Thursday morning and finding at my doorstep Friday before noon. FedEx overnight, somebody loves me. This was supposed to ship ground.

I’ve bought a Weber Q several years ago, so I already know what the fuss is about. Cast iron grill, great cook platform, etc. I’ve never used a cover, so over the years, I’ve had to replace burners, etc. as they corroded and degraded. Not Weber’s fault, but Weber customer service is the greatest, 24/7 etc., cheerfully helped identify what I needed and sent me the replacement parts.

I’ve been enviously looking at the 300 and when I saw the specs on the 320, I knew I was looking at my next Weber.

I thought I knew what I was getting, but I was pleasantly surprised at what I unboxed. This one is even cleverer than the original.

Stationary Cart is a well thought out design. Stable, with safety features I’ve never seen implemented as well. The Tank storage system that locks the propane tank in place so it can’t shift and also provides the cart with a counterweight to help prevent tips is a marvel by itself. The collapsible shelf system is elegant and functional while feeling more substantial than the Q200’s fixed shelfs.

The slightly larger cooking area is served by split cast iron grills instead of the single grill piece used by the Q200. This actually makes this grill easier to clean and service, while taking nothing away from the cook area. A stainless steel warming rack is a nice place to put up food from the grill surface. Just sits there but is totally substantial and stable.

A second burning tube, stainless steel to prevent rusting out provides the additional heat and controls to bring the grill up to the temperatures I need to cook in colder weather. 40degrees last night, and the grill still heated up to over 400 degrees in about 5 minutes.

Thermostat is simple, and will be easy to replace in the event of breakage or failure. This has an integral BBQ light that has a sensor that automatically turns it off when the lid is lowered. Very cool.

I have never been satisfied with the old style igniter on the previous Q models. The Q320 now has a electronic igniter that works great. Uses a AAA battery. Press a button and poof. Weber’s lit. The outer burner ignites the center burner automatically.

Assembly was easy with two of us, but this could have been assembled easily by one person. Directions could have been better, but pictures worked fine.

Food tastes great. Looking foward to putting through it’s paces this summer.

Already bought my grill cover. This time I don’t plan on abusing Weber Customer service as much.

Originally planned on gettin’ the Weber Summit S-320 but at $980 (the cost of livin’ in paradise), it was pricey enough to give pause. Decided on the Q 300 when I realized that I would only be cookin’ for a dozen at most. Locally, the Q 300 was priced at $377. When I discovered that Amazon had the upgraded 300 series for $18 less, I jumped at the opportunity. And $0.01 shipping – 2 day FedEx no less – made it a sweeter deal.

This compact grill heats faster and cooks better than any $300 big box model, even if said model is rated at > 40,000 btu and the Q 320 is “only” 21,700 btu. Sears steaks and veges like no one’s business and also does great roasting with the burners turned down. A snap to assemble (no cussing required) and also pleasing to the eye.

If you’re looking for your 1st grill, get the Q 320. If you’re looking for a replacement grill, get the Q 320. If don’t need a grill but have $359.01 lying around, get the Q 320.

Weber 386002 Q-100 Portable Gas Grill

The Weber Q 100 portable gas grill has push-button ignition for easy reliable lighting, an infinitely adjustable burner valve with a high-quality regulator, sturdy glass-reinforced nylon grill frame, cast aluminum lid and body, a large weather-resistant lid handle, a porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grate, and operates on a standard 14.1 or 16.4 ounce propane cylinders (sold separately). Includes Weber Q recipe booklet.

Weber crafted the grill’s lid and body in tough cast aluminum with a sturdy glass-reinforced nylon frame. The grill ignites at the push of a button for reliable lighting, and an infinitely adjustable burner valve with a high-quality regulator makes it easy to control the heat. Meat sizzles on the porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates, while drippings follow the drip ducts to reduce potential flare-ups and enable quicker cleaning.

Other highlights include a flavorizer system integrated into the cooking grate, a removable catch pan, and a large weather-resistant lid handle. The grill operates on a standard 14.1- or 16.4-ounce propane cylinder. Propane does not come included, but Weber does enclose a Weber Q cookbook of recipes and inspiration. The grill measures 16 by 27 by 23-1/2 inches with the lid open and carries a five-year limited warranty.

Great Grill for Everyday Use! May 13, 2008

I’ve been using a Q100 / Baby Q for over 2 years now, and am still impressed by the quality of the product and what I’m able to do with it given it’s small size. Here’s the set up:

Q100 Grill
Weber Cart
Bulk tank adapter
5-lb. propane tank

The grill surface is large enough for a family of four. Six 1/3 lb. burgers fit well enough; more and they are hard to turn. I’ve also been able to do two average sized tri-tips at once. The lid isn’t tall enough to allow a whole chicken. I was a bit wary of the 8K BTU rating at first, but the grill heats up just fine- it will do a wonderful sear on pretty much anything after 7-10 minutes of preheat. The heat is also very even, with the virtually whole grill surface usable. The best thing about the small burner is fuel efficiency; 5 lbs. of propane lasts all season (in SoCal!) at 1-2 uses per week. Please note that this is a single burner grill with a ring-shaped burner. Indirect cooking isn’t really possible although on low heat, one can get close enough to do justice to a tri-tip.

I’ve only got a couple of small complaints… First, the support ring for the portable tank (at least with the Baby Q) only accepted 14 oz. propane bottles- the kind used with plumber’s torches. They are more expensive than the 16 oz. bottles used for camping. I just made my own 16 oz. bottle ring out of a heavy coat hanger. Of course with the bulk tank, this is a non-issue. The 5 lb. tank (from Home Depot) is pretty small. Second, the grill is somewhat sensitive to wind. A good breeze blowing through the sides causes a definite loss of temperature above the grill surface, under the lid. Cooking is still possible but times go up about 30-40%. Last, the holes in the burner can get clogged up, especially when there’s a lot of liquid pouring off the grill surface. I’ve had to ‘unclog’ parts of the burner with a push-pin a couple of times now.

Anyway, I love the product as it’s about 75% of a full-size grill at 1/3 the size and 1/4 the price, within its limits (grill area). I think the only thing I’d do differently is get the version with the side tables (Q120).

Fantastic Grill.. Gooodbye Charcoal May 20, 2008

Last year when I bought this grill, over 100 people had written 4 plus star reviews. So I took their advice and bought this grill, you can see those reviews if you look for Baby Q.

A year later I still love cooking on the Q. I cook for three plus leftovers. The heavy grate is fantastic, all the other grills had thin, flimsy grates. I love grilling with the Q, I can cook dinner in 15-20 minutes.
I hooked mine up to a 5 lb propane tank. The five lb tank is the smallest tank you can buy, I can cook for a month on it.

This grill starts out hot for 6 months, then to get it to grill hot with a propane tank… turn tank on slowly, over ten seconds, and then light grill at the end of two minutes.

Lots of people use tanks with this grill.Weber does not like it, but the support women will talk you through set up if you ask nice. The weber hot line is veryhelpful with cooking suggestions, I had a temp problem they helped me resolve, but buy the book.

Get a stop watch,a basting brush, tongs, grill brush and read the Webber grilling book. This makes a huge difference in the quality of your cooking, I mean it, follow a few directions to get sucess everytime. The weber book is worth is for the grilling time charts.

Leaving charcoal behind took me way too long… this is superior.
Support from Weber is wonderful….
So buy this grill and have fun cooking this summer.

Another year later I am still in love with my grill. The heavy cast iron grate is what makes ths grill superior to other, cheaper grills. My friends bought the cheaper ones, the food sticks, and burns on. You must clean the grate when the grill is hot, after cooking, it takes about one minutes of scarping with the grill brush. My friends with the cheap grills never want to grill, their grills are dirty and a pain to clean. My grill is always ready to go.

A Must-Have for Camping Use May 26, 2008

My family purchased a roadtrip grill 2 years ago to use for camping and we absolutely love it. The Stove Grate accessory made it even better, we use it for cooking, making coffee, heating up water for cocoa, washing, & etc. We are about to purchase a second grate as well. If you’re thinking about purchasing an accessory griddle I recommend getting one of these instead and then use a pan.

Good Item, July 5, 2007
By D. Hill “Garden Diva” (Torrington CT USA)

Heavy weight cover but I wish it were a zipper type bag instead since we store our grill in our trailer and use it for camping-this cover really does not get used the way it would if it were a zipper style carry bag for that reason and because we keep our “kitchen” under cover when camping any way. If you use your grill on your deck or store it outdoors all the time this would work perfectly. If you are using this grill as a “take along” item only then you can do without it.

Very impressed!, December 27, 2008
By Russell –

This is a very heavy duty cover. It is made to fit the largest RoadTrip model (Pro). I have the LXE model which is smaller, but the cover fits nicely and does not seem too large. It stays in place even in high wind conditions. The cover is easy to get off and on.

James Purviance, author of Weber’s Way to Grill:The step-by-Step Guide to Expert Grilling (Oxmoor House, 2009) offers these simple steps for grilling ease.

Set up two or three heat zones, with a hot side and a cold side. “This way you are not locked into one heat if things aren’t going right,” Purviance says.

Oil the food, not the grill. The food will be less likely to stick, and you will use less oil. Allow sufficient pre-heat time to get the grilling surface nice and hot.

Keep the lid closed. That keeps the grate hotter for searing foods, prevents flare-ups because less air is getting in to fuel the flame ad traps some of the smoke to better flavor the food.
